Cultural Awareness (bridging the gap)
Vanesu, as a first-generation African American, possesses a distinct cultural perspective that melds African and American experiences. This unique background equips her with a deepened understanding of our mission, enabling her to bridge diverse cultural viewpoints in a meaningful way.
With a robust academic background in Clinical/Community Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a minor in Chemistry, she brings a blend of analytical acumen and deep insights into community dynamics.
Vanesu’s commitment to cultural sensitivity and community wellness is evident in her various research and leadership roles. Her involvement in the TRIOWell Project at the University of Illinois, which focused on culturally tailored community interventions for middle-aged African American women, particularly aligns with our mission of promoting and preserving African culture.
In addition to her academic achievements, Vanesu has been an active member of Christian Fellowship International (conference planning), playing a pivotal role in mentoring youth and organizing community events. These experiences have honed her skills in event planning, team coordination, and youth engagement, which are crucial for our organization’s outreach and educational initiatives. Recognized as an OMSA Academic Honoree, Vanesu’s academic excellence and her role as a Health and Safety Officer in Alpha Chi Sigma demonstrate her dedication to inclusivity and community safety.
At BeingAfrican, we believe Vanesu’s first-generation American perspective and cultural heritage makes her exceptionally equipped to contribute to our mission. Her ability to navigate and understand diverse cultural landscapes will be invaluable in celebrating and honouring the rich tapestry of African culture, bridging communities across continents.
